INK FISH
A young woman finds unexpected inspiration while attempting to compose a melody.
Through attempting to create music, Dune is searching for inspiration from the living world beyond herself. She pushes through her day intent on composing her melody, even though her boss dominates, her upstairs neighbors are indifferent, and her lover rejects her. She craves connection on her own terms, as a form of communion with the greater natural world. In the end we see her desire for musical inspiration finally fulfilled by an encounter with an almost alien being, an Ink Fish (or squid), which to our knowledge makes no sound.
However, just because we as humans cannot hear or perceive something does not mean it doesn’t exist. Einstein’s theory of spacetime tells us that the real universe is not silent, but instead alive with vibrating energy. And according to the ancient Hindu Vedas, there is a Divine Energy and other myriad forces that guide the material world, including our emotions, thoughts, and feelings, which are all also vibrating.
There is an openness to the wider cosmos at the core of this story. Dune remains receptive to hearing the vibrations all around her despite her difficult day, as she longs for a more embodied experience of reality. Artistic pursuit can be seen as a way of channeling one’s deepest self into a union with the universe, and no matter how painful life can be, there is always magic and wonder to be found all around us.
